Control Gates Bridge Sewer Repair
Replacing Two Sections of Control Gates Bridge Wastewater Main
As a vital piece of infrastructure regulating water storage in Taupō, the District Council engaged Nolan Drainage in an important upgrade for two wastewater mains.
This project spanned a week, and required our experienced and qualified technicians to work around the strict environmental considerations. This included hydro-excavation, using sandbags to stop runoff, and proper storage and disposal of old asbestos-cement (AC) pipe.
After silt fences were set up on the river bank, we used a 3-ton digger to skim the top soil. Hydro-excavation was then required so as not to disturb any underground services. We then placed a fence around the entire area to protect the public from the works.

Removal of Old AC Pipe & Replacing
Full PPE was required when cutting and removing the old AC pipe, due to the presence of asbestos. As approved handlers of asbestos, we followed safe practice and removal of asbestos requirements. We cut the two wastewater mains into 1m sections to be double bagged and properly disposed. Once all the old pipe was removed, we began replacing the two sewer mains with new 200mm PVC pipe, attached to steel pipe with Gibault.
The mains were then set live to test for leaks, with a vacuum truck on standby in case of leakage.

Upgraded Sewer Mains for Control Gate Bridge
After the two wastewater mains were replaced with the new PVC pipe, we could remove the trench shields, backfill the trench and compact the fill in 300mm layers. The topsoil was replaced and grass seeded. The final day of work involved removing the temporary fencing and replacing with the permanent fence. The silt fence was left in place to allow the grass seed to take, preventing washout.
As part of our ongoing contract with the Taupō District Council, we were proud of our involvement in this project. We were pleased to help make this important infrastructure safer and better for future generations.
